As expected it was an intense encounter from the start with limited to no chances at both ends. France went ahead in the 40th minute off an Antoine Griezmann free-kick which was headed in by Raphael Varane. The Equipe Tricolore went into the break with a 1-0 lead.
Things didn’t change after the break and the deciding second goal came in the 61st minute when a Griezmann shot went through the hands of keeper Nestor Muslera in a massive goalkeeping error.
This was the killer of Uruguay attemping to come back into the game as they created no goalscoring opportunity thereafter as France won 2-0 and moved into the semifinals.
