Bayern Munich – Doing Good Together – 16.000€ for cancer research!

The life-size player figures of Joshua Kimmich, Kingsley Coman, Thomas Müller and the rest of the current Bayern Munich squad have always been a popular photo motif at the FC Bayern Museum. You look them in the eye, you compare – and once a year there is even the opportunity for all fans to bring their stars home. When the new team “moves into” the museum at the turn of the season, last year’s figures are sold for a good cause. This time, with a grant from the club, a total of 16,000 Euros was collected. Yesterday, March 1, the amount was donated to the FC Bayern Museum under the motto “Doing good together” to the Bavarian Center for Cancer Research (BZKF).

“We at FC Bayern want to attract attention to cancer screening,” said Herbert Hainer in his welcoming speech. The “successful interaction” with the BZKF is therefore in all senses: “Our fans are happy about the figures of their stars – and with the proceeds we can do good together,” said the president of FC Bayern, who made the donation together with FCB board member Andy Jung in the museum in front of invited volunteer guests. “Our museum has not only a historical, but also a social responsibility, which results from our self-image,” emphasized Jung, “the 16,000 euros are used absolutely correctly at the BZKF.”

The topic of cancer has recently caught up with football. Last year, four Bundesliga professionals were diagnosed with a malignant tumor within a few months. Hainer recalled the illnesses of Sebastian Haller (Dortmund), Timo Baumgartl (Union Berlin) and Marco Richter (Hertha BSC). This, but also the cases of national goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger (FC Chelsea) and former Bundesliga striker Ebbe Sand (Schalke 04) are cautionary examples of the importance of cancer prevention. “Especially younger people need to be sensitized to the topic,” said Hainer.

In order to sharpen the senses for this important topic, FC Bayern gathered a top-class panel of experts on the occasion of the donation ceremony. Prof. Dr. Roland Schmidt, team doctor of FC Bayern; Prof. Dr. Martin Trepel, member of the board of directors of the BZKF; Prof. Dr. Thomas Bein, patient representative of the BZKF; and Susanne Kagermeier, contact person at the BürgerTelefonKrebs, spoke with moderator Katrin Müller-Hohenstein about sport and nutrition, lifestyle, cancer risk, predisposition and prevention as well as chances of recovery with early diagnosis.
