The most important fact for all to remember is that India as a member of the Asian Football Confederation and under the country participation rules of AFC Asian level club competitions for the AFC Champions League and the AFC Cup, the nations willing to participate will have to organise a national cup competition besides the national league.
Lets not get into the discussion of national league in India as it is a never ending one, but the Super Cup which replaces the old Federation Cup is officially India’s new national cup competition, so it serves an official purpose of being having to be held.
But I come back to my original question, Does Indian football need the new Super Cup?
I personally feel a big yes, then Indian club football needs a cup competition of its own in which clubs and franchises from different leagues and levels face each other in competitive matches.
We all as football fans want to know, if I-League clubs can beat Indian Super League franchises in a one-off match and what other surprises the tournament would have in store for us.
The question that can be raised is if the timing in the calendar, scheduling and format is correct or not, should in future the Second Division League clubs also be included and can the Super Cup be played like a proper knockout tournament through the season like cup competitions around the world do.
Therefore it is sad to see administrators, club officials and others raising questions about the future of the tournament, then one thing is sure. It is here to stay, but please work on its weaknesses and then the Super Cup would be a great tournament for Indian club football!
