First half of season sees second-highest average attendance in Germany’s Bundesliga history!

In the first half of the current 2017-18 season, the Bundesliga enjoyed a significant upturn in spectator numbers compared with 2016-17. Each match was attended by an average of 43,429 fans. This represented the second-highest average attendance for the first half of the season in Bundesliga history, beaten only by 2011-12 (44,345), as well as an increase of eight percent as against the 2016-17 season (40,271).

The 153 matches in the first half of the season were attended by a total of 6,644,612 spectators (2016-17: 6,161,399). The improvement is due in part to the change in the composition of the Bundesliga following the return of VfB Stuttgart and Hannover 96 to the top flight and the resulting increase in stadium capacity. Stadium utilisation again exceeded 90 percent.

The average attendance in Bundesliga 2 declined to 16,693 fans per match (2016-17: 20,845). This was largely due to the change in composition, with five different teams compared with the previous season. A total of 2,554,072 spectators visited the stadiums (2016-17: 3,189,292).
