Former India international & assistant coach Shanto Mitra no more!

Former India international and national team assistant coach Shanto Mitra passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 75 in Kolkata. Shanto Mitra passed away at a city hospital at 7:20am after having been battling cancer for long.

Shanto Mitra played for East Bengal Club from 1965-72 and captained the side in 1970. During his illustrious career with the red and gold, Mitra won the Durand Cup and the Rovers Cup thrice (each), the IFA Shield four times, the Calcutta Football League four times, the Bordoloi Trophy twice and the Sait Nagjee Trophy once. He was also a member of the East Bengal squad in 1972 which remained unbeaten all throughout the season winning five trophies in the process.

Shanto Mitra captained Bengal to win the 1969 Santosh Trophy.

AIFF president Praful Patel in his message said, “It is sad to hear that Mr. Santo Mitra is no more. His contribution to Indian Football will never be forgotten. I share the grief.”

Meanwhile AIFF General Secretary Kushal Das said, “Mr. Shanto Mitra was a crafty Footballer and will be alive in his achievements. He has been the inspiration of so many Footballers. May He Rest in Peace.”

After having been part of the India team in the 1960s, Shanto Mitra along with Amjad Khan was assistant coach to Yugoslavian coach Milovan Ciric at the 1984 Nehru Cup. Thereafter he would be India manager for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic qualifiers and football project director for the 2002 Asian Games in Busan.

The former footballer was the sheriff of Kolkata till Utpal Chatterjee took over in January 2010.
