India goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu leaves Stabæk IF!

Indian national team goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu has decided to leave Norwegian Tippeligaen club Stabæk IF, who have also confirmed that veteran goalkeeper John Alvbåge will be replacing Gurpreet.

„Gurpreet Singh Sandhu wants more playtime and returns to India,“ Stabæk IF announced on their website. „Gurpreet Singh Sandhu has been a part of Stabæk’s team since 2014, but he is now travelling to India where new challenges await him.“

„We thank Gurpreet for the time we have had together and wish him good luck for his career,“ the statement concluded.

„Singh has been a good person to have in the club. He has developed a lot during his time in Stabæk. Now he has made a club change which I think will be good for him,“ Norwegian newspaper Budstikka quoted Stabæk manager Antoni Ordinas.

Speaking to Stabæk’s media team, Gurpreet said: „First of all I would like to thank Stabæk and take this opportunity to thank Stabæk for what they have done for me and what they have provided me with. It has been an incredible experience. I will never forget what I have done over here and the good time I’ve had. On the other hand I’m excited about my next destination and I’m looking forward to join the team and do well over there. But I will always keep Stabæk in my heart because it’s a special club.“

Gurpreet named his Tippeligaen debut and the UEFA Europa League qualifier as his personal highlights during his time in Norway. „I waited for that for such a long time. To get that opportunity coming from where I come from is very special. It has been an incredible journey and I’m very sad that it’s coming to an end.“

„I hope I will come back. I will miss the fans, I will miss the staff and everyone. You all have been very, very, very good and I’m very sad that I have to leave.“

He also made a hint on his new club, while asked about his future: „I think I will catch a flight tomorrow and head back since the team is supposed to play a competition next week. So I’m looking forward to prepare for that and do well over there.“

Gurpreet joined Stabæk IF in August 2014 on a three-year contract. He played for the Stabæk in the Norwegian Football Cup and the Tippeligaen, besides becoming the first Indian footballer to feature in the UEFA Europa League.
