India’s Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore answers ISL/I-League merger question in Parliament!

The Sports Minister of India, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, was recently asked in the Upper House of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, about the current status of the merger plans of the AIFF for the Indian Super League and the I-League.

The issue was raised by West Bengal MP, Ritabrata Banerjee, in a question about the ISL/I-League merger status.

Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore informed the house, “AIFF along with all its stakeholders has planned to restructure the club football model in India wherein there would be one unified league at the top followed by lower division leagues namely, League 1 and League 2 in line with global best practices.”

He further added that the AIFF has sought help from world football governing body FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation in order to implement a workable plan about the ISL/I-League merger.

What the final plan or when it will be presented and then implemented is not known at this stage.
