Supervisory board chairman Frank Witter emphasised, “I’m very happy that Jörg Schmadtke has put his personal plans to one side and that we’ll be continuing on this path together for a good while longer. Now it’s about consolidating structures during this period and setting the course for a successful future for VfL Wolfsburg.”
Schmadtke joined VfL as managing director for sport in July 2018. He brought former VfL player Schäfer back to the club from the USA to become sporting director, and the pair led the Wolves into the UEFA Europa League in their first season following two years in the relegation play-off. The following year, the Green-and-Whites finished seventh which earned them a place in UEFA Europa League qualifying, before achieving UEFA Champions League qualification with a fourth-place finish last term.
