Mohun Bagan Day: Subrata Bhattacharya receives ‘Mohun Bagan Ratna’!

Mohun BaganAsia’s oldest football side, Mohun Bagan Athletic Club, on Saturday, July 29 evening celebrated its yearly Mohun Bagan Day in Kolkata.

The Mohun Bagan Day has been celebrated since 2001 on July 29 each year in honour of Mohun Bagan’s victory over the East Yorkshire Regiment in the final of the 1911 IFA Shield.

The recipient of the 2017 Mohun Bagan Ratna was former club defender Subrata Bhattacharya, who across his 17 year long career only played for the Mariners and also lifted the National Football League title as club coach twice.

The Best Footballer of 2016/17 season awards went to striker Balwant Singh, while Deep Saha was conferred the Best Youth Football Player award.

Former Indian women’s cricket captain Jhulan Goswami was given a special award for becoming the highest wicket-taker in One-Day Internationals. Meanwhile former Bengal Ranji captain Shyam Sundar Mitra received the Lifetime achievement award.

Other awardees: Best Cricketer of the year (2016-17) – Debabrata Das; Best athlete – Lily Das; Birth centenary award – Dinanath Roy (posthumous).
