Will the European Super League actually move forward?

If you’re a football fan you’ve certainly been caught up in the news over this past week in regard to the planned European Super League, the big teams in the UK of Arsenal FC, Chelsea FC, Liverpool FC, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur join the six teams from Italy and Spain in AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, FC Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus FC, and Real Madrid in plans to create their own super league. This isn’t the first time the topic has been approached, there had been mention of it toward the back half of last year where it had been noted that the big teams were planning something in the same regard, although not structured in a similar way. It hasn’t exactly been met with excitement, either, as many have already condemned the plans for this to happen.

The managers of the big six UK clubs have already mentioned their own views on the potential change – and not for the first time, Klopp for example has a history for the past few years in opposing any move to an independent league like this whilst most recently stating, “For me, the Champions League is the Super League, in which you do not always end up playing against the same teams.” Many fans and pundits share the same sentiment, that being promoted to the UEFA Champions League is on merit of performing well that season rather than just being part of the league because you have the money and the invite to do so.

It isn’t only the managers that have spoken out, however, as UEFA and the Premier League have both also condemned the idea alongside UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and reading through comments on message boards and social media it’s clear to see that the fans aren’t in favour either. Given there has been discussion around the prospect of banning players from international competition if they’re involved in the European Super League as part of these teams too, it could create a lot of conflict between the players and the clubs if they’re still hoping to attend the big international events all the same way.

For many, it will also be just as interesting to see how alternative services react to any potential changes too. The past year has been extremely difficult path for online football betting as the start of 2020 saw cancellations and postponements that led to the success in alternative gaming options but with major sporting coming back strong there are many opportunities to be found. This is through offers, such as the latest bet365 bonus from timecube.com, which is being used on these popular football betting markets. It is now a question of how successful things will be, particularly if this move toward the ESL causes further rifts and disruptions within football, or whether this will generate more interest with the possibility of a new league emerging despite the efforts to ensure it doesn’t get off the ground to begin with.
