Will we see the creation of a European Super League?

In recent days and weeks news has appeared across European media that world football governing body FIFA is holding talks with European club football giants to discuss the launch of an European Premier League after earlier rumours of top clubs discussed the creation of a European Super League.

If the rumour is right or wrong isn’t the point of my article but rather the question, will we see the creation of an European Super League in the future?

And despite the statements of European governing body UEFA, the top leagues of Europe, the European Club Association and the top clubs, the idea of a European Super League has been discussed by Europe’s football elite but it hasn’t reached the point of going into concrete planning and implementation so far.

The problem in European club football since the creation of the UEFA Champions League in 1992 has been the money that participating clubs can earn by qualifying for the UCL helps them earn revenues which is substantially higher than competing local league clubs.

Due to this the big European clubs over the years have earned more and more with the gap between clubs competing within respective leagues, be it English Premier League, Spanish LaLiga, German Bundesliga, Italian Serie A, French Ligue 1 and other leagues has grown exponentially.

This last led to Bayern Munich in Germany, Juventus FC in Italy and Paris Saint-Germain in France winning their respective leagues multiple times over the last decade, while in England and Spain it was been mainly a race between two clubs.

That brings me to the question, does Europe need a European Super League?

And unlike others who speak out for their respective domestic competitions, I’d say that the European super clubs besides a few more clubs have outgrown their domestic competitions and this could led into a European Super League becoming a reality over the next decade.

This divide within leagues has been made even more visible through the ongoing pandemic.

But then there is the UEFA Champions League and the European football governing body UEFA, who will fight to keep the integrity of their continental club competitions. UEFA is making reforms to their competitions from next season by creating the UEFA Europa Conference League below the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.

The future of European club football is undecided at this moment and we will have to wait if the European Super League sees the day of light. But this discussion will continue…
