Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa has come away impressed with the new football initiatives and programmes of the Philippine Football Federation (PFF), following his visit to the capital city of Manila.
During his time in the Philippines, which concluded on Sunday, Shaikh Salman met with newly elected PFF President John Gutierrez and PFF Executive Committee members and was presented with an overview of the Federation’s upcoming plans for the sport.
The AFC President was also updated on the progress of the new PFF headquarters project in Carmona, a five-storey facility situated around 40 kilometres away from Manila on 4,231 square metres of land that was procured through the AFC President’s Infrastructure Initiative Programme in 2020.
“The construction of the new PFF headquarters building, which is located in close proximity to their National Training Centre, represents an important milestone for Philippine football,” Shaikh Salman said. “The various infrastructure that is being put in place will allow the PFF to house its core football facilities close together in a single location, as well as the further expansion of its administration team.
“It also underlines the AFC’s resolve to aid the development of football in its Member Associations as part of its Vision, and the Confederation is committed to continuing its support for the PFF’s future plans.
“Football’s popularity, especially the women’s game, in the Philippines has grown exponentially in recent times and I am confident that under the capable leadership of President Gutierrez and his team, its exciting potential can be realised in the coming years.”
In addition to lauding the efforts of the PFF during his visit, Shaikh Salman attended a gala dinner organised by the PFF on Thursday, May 9 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the AFC’s founding, which occurred on May 8, 1954 in Manila on the sidelines of the second Asian Games.
Held at the Balmori Suite Tent in Rockwell, Makati City, the event featured a plaque presentation by PFF President Gutierrez to the AFC President to mark the significant occasion. The PFF President also expressed his appreciation and gratitude for Shaikh Salman’s support and underlined his determination to work closely with the AFC to elevate football in the Philippines.
