In a bid to equip Asia’s match officials with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel both on and off the field, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) conducted a five-day onsite module for Batch 5 of the AFC Referee Academy in September 2023 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Taking place between September 25 and 29, the module was attended by 47 referees, both male and female, who underwent extensive training under the guidance of some of the most renowned instructors from across the globe.
The opening day of the programme included several interesting discussions, including an ice-breaking session that provided the participants, who started their journey earlier this year, with an opportunity to get to know each other better.
With significant focus being laid on meeting the physical demands of officiating, the five days witnessed the participants engage in intense physical training that ranged from overseeing matches to speed and agility tests, weight control, as well as improving their positions and movements on the pitch.
The programme also comprised in-depth analyses of technical topics such as actual match incidents, the complex role of a referee, and game management as well as sessions on more universal subjects of integrity and ways to sharpen communication and team building skills.
“The last five days have been a delightful experience for us all. It has been a privilege to be able to attend this onsite module where we got to learn from so many experts,” said Surojit Das from the All India Football Federation.
“We have received so many insights and have gained valuable training and we are all excited for this new chapter in our careers,” he added.
The AFC Referee Academy was introduced in 2017 to increase the number of AFC world-class referees and extend development support to AFC Member Associations.
