FC Goa go down fighting to Salgaocar FC in GFA President’s Super League!

The FC Goa Development Team went down fighting against Salgaocar FC in the GFA President’s Super League at the Salvador do Mundo Panchayat Ground on Sunday. Salgeo Dias opened the scoring for the Gaurs, but an own-goal by Kunal Kundaikar and a penalty goal by Samuel Costa helped Salgaocar script a remarkable comeback victory.

FC Goa Development Team head coach Deggie Cardozo changed his entire starting XI on Sunday, as Manushawn Fernandes, Danstan Fernandes and Delton Colaco among others returned to the playing XI. Among them, Colaco’s stint was short-lived as the forward had to be subbed off due to injury in the 19th minute.

The Gaurs broke the deadlock in the 39th minute. Vasim Inamdar played a beautiful through ball into the opponents’ box and it was youngster Salgeo who connected, firing his shot past their goalkeeper and into the bottom corner. Their joy, however, lasted for just three minutes as they themselves gifted the opponents the equaliser in a rather unfortunate fashion.

Kundaikar’s backward pass caught Hansel Coelho off guard and the Goa goalkeeper was in no position to make a save as the ball flew into the back of the net meaning the teams would head into half-time with the score reading 1-1.

Deggie Cardozo’s boys adopted a cautious approach in the second half, trying to hold on to the ball and thereby control the tempo of the match. Salgaocar, however, countered it effectively with heavy pressing and forced them into mistakes.

That, along with a lack of cohesion in midfield and attack proved costly for FC Goa, as they failed to create an impact in the opponents’ half for the rest of the match.

Salgaocar, made FC Goa pay for their lack of penetration when they completed their comeback in the 82nd minute when Samuel scored the winner from the spot. Although Goa shot-stopper Hansel guessed correctly and timed his jump well, the youngster’s shot was too hot for him to handle.

The FC Goa Dev Team will return to action on Wednesday, May 4, when they lock horns with Kerala Blasters FC in the Reliance Foundation Development League. The game is slated for a 4:30pm kickoff at the Benaulim Panchayat Ground.
