Max Eberl: RB Leipzig have so much potential!

Max Eberl joined RB Leipzig as sporting director in December 2022. During an interview with club media, the 49-year-old spoke about his time away from the game, his aims for the academy and the quality in the first-team squad.

Max Eberl said on…

…the RB Leipzig squad

We’ve got a fantastic squad. We’ve got great players and an exciting mix of lads who were promoted with us from the 3.Liga and other top players. Then we’ve got Hugo Novoa, a player from our academy now in the first team. We’ve already managed to extend Mo Simakan’s contract – there are other players whose deals expire in 2024, but that’s something I’ll really get stuck into in January.

…the Academy

The academy is extremely important for the club and the region! I will take full responsibility for the academy and want to work closely with it. I firstly need to learn about the structure and have some conversations. I believe I can help us get youngsters into the first team who can go on to enjoy lots of success with us.

…his time away from Football

I made the conscious decision to step away, as painful as it was for everyone involved. Ultimately though, it was the only decision I could make. I learnt a lot about myself and started to reflect on things. I was at the same club for 23 years, where I started off as a player and then eventually ended as sporting director. I never had the time to reflect or think about things. In the end, I reached my limit.

It was important that I understood that and that I learnt important things about myself for the future. There are a few things that I will need to protect myself from a bit. I learnt that I need to tell people when I’m not feeling well so that they can support me. This involves other things like my diet and sport, which can help to clear my head.
