Sven Mislintat has been appointed as Ajax Amsterdam’s new Director of Football. Ajax and the German have reached an agreement on this matter. He has signed a contract in Amsterdam that formally runs from May 19, 2023, until June 30, 2026.
Mislintat (Dortmund, November 5, 1972) worked as Head of Scouting and Head of Professional Football at Borussia Dortmund from 2006 to 2017. He then joined Arsenal FC in England as Head of Recruitment. In 2019, he returned to the Bundesliga, where he started working as Sporting Director at VfB Stuttgart. In November of last year, Mislintat did not renew his contract after he had indicated that he was looking for a new challenge.
Since the departure of Marc Overmars in February 2022, the vacant position of Director of Football at Ajax Amsterdam was filled by the technical managers Gerry Hamstra and Klaas Jan Huntelaar. Huntelaar will remain a technical manager and will report to Mislintat.
Ajax Amsterdam CEO Edwin van der Sar said, “It is good for Ajax that we have been able to fill this important position with an internationally experienced football director who can start quickly. A careful process preceded the search for the right person. We were looking for someone who stands for attacking and attractive football. Someone who has an international network, and has an eye for scouting, development, and the growth of our own youth. Sven meets the profile, and he made a very good impression on us from the first talks in February. In addition, he has a way of working that fits today’s industry. I am convinced that he will make an important contribution to new successes of Ajax.”
Sven Mislintat added, “From the day in February when Edwin called me to ask if I would be interested to walk through their process to become the Director of Football at Ajax, I immediately got caught up by the idea and stopped talking to others. Born and raised in Dortmund, I grew up in the shadow of significant, traditional football clubs. Ever since my childhood, I have known, and still see, Ajax as one of the most iconic clubs in the world. To become Ajax’s Director of Football after trustful, intense, and great talks means a lot to me. I feel it as a huge honour and see it as my obligation to support the club to the best of my abilities.”
