To mark the annual celebration of the United Nations adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, we reiterate UEFA’s commitment to using football’s enormous reach and influence to drive respect for human rights.
Football is all about sharing a common passion. It brings together people of different backgrounds, age and nationalities. While the discrimination that afflicts society inevitably plays out on and off the pitch, the world’s most popular sport has huge potential to help break down barriers and unite communities.
In late 2021, UEFA launched its Football Sustainability Strategy 2030. Entitled ‘Strength through Unity’, the strategy describes how, via eleven dedicated policies, European football’s governing body will leverage the visibility and influence of football to drive collaboration on socially responsible and environmentally friendly actions.
Speaking on Human Rights Day 2022, Michele Uva, UEFA Football and Social Responsibility director, said, “UEFA is committed to ensuring that dignity, respect and equal rights and opportunities are afforded to everyone involved in football in a spirit of freedom and justice.”
“We look forward to continuing to develop activities around our seven human rights policies and to engage in important dialogue around the respect and promotion of human rights in European football.”
