VAR makes debut as all-female match officials create history at 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup!

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) made its successful debut in the Quarterfinals of the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup – India across two venues – the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai and Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune – on Sunday.

This is the first time in the tournament’s history that the VAR was implemented and it will continue to be utilised in the Playoff matches, Semifinals and Finals on February 6.

History was also made when an all-female cast of match officials including the VAR and Assistant VAR (AVAR), was appointed to the Japan versus Thailand Quarterfinal, further underlining the Asian Football Confederation (AFC)’s commitment to grow women’s football on and off the pitch.

2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup referee Casey Reibelt from Australia officiated the match alongside assistant referees Ramina Tsoi from Kyrgyz Republic and Joanna Charaktis from Australia while Katherine Jacewicz and Lara Lee, also from Australia, were appointed as VAR and AVAR respectively.

A total of 39 match officials, comprising 16 referees and assistant referees and seven video match officials (VMOs), were selected for the showpiece, making it the largest cast of match officials to be appointed for the showpiece that started on January 20, 2022.
