1.FSV Mainz 05 fire coach Achim Beierlorzer after loss & players revolt!

Achim Beierlorzer has been relieved of his duties as head coach of 1.FSV Mainz 05. The decision has been reached following a review of the current sporting circumstances at the club by Mainz directors Rouven Schröder and Stefan Hofmann and extensive talks with Beierlozer on Sunday, Spetember 27 afternoon.

Rouven Schröder said of the decision, “Together, we’ve been examining the club’s sporting direction and the question of how we can take into account new developments, alongside how we can motivate and inspire the team in the short term and with a view to the future. The result of these open and honest talks is that the club will not be continuing to work with Achim Beierlorzer. His time at the club was characterised by a successful fight against relegation and the difficult working conditions as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Achim Beierlorzer deserves a lot of respect for his work and his attitude throughout this difficult time that has affected us all.”

Achim Beierlorzer said, “I’m disappointed by the club’s decision. Nevertheless, I would like to wish Mainz 05 and the team all the best for the future.”

Jan-Moritz takes over as head coach

Taking over as head coach, 1.FSV Mainz 05 have found a replacement from within the club, as former assistant coach Jan-Moritz Lichte will take over for the ongoing season. The 40-year-old has been a part of the coaching staff at the club since 2017.

Mainz 05 sporting director Rouven Schröder said, “Jan-Moritz Lichte has a lot of technical expertise, along with more than ten years of experience as a coach. He also knows our club inside and out. For this reason, we have the utmost trust in him to take over for the ongoing season. His new role will also offer the opportunity for Jan-Moritz Lichte to implement his footballing philosophies and to develop and make a name for himself as a leader. His development in this regard will be taken into account when we make a decision about the position of coach in the future, which will give him and the club enough time to evaluate our options properly.”

Jan-Moritz Lichte said, “In my new role, I’m going to focus on what I can directly influence, which is working with the team in training and preparing for the match against Union Berlin on Friday. That’s the most important focus for the team, and for me.”

Ongoing review of those in charge

Sporting director Rouven Schröder emphasised that the internal reorganization of the past few days will continue.

“Our review of the club’s current sporting direction has not been concluded with the replacement of the head coach. We continue to be in constant communication with the club’s committees and with the team in order to self-critically review the circumstances of the past few weeks and find solutions. What we’re looking for is a greater degree of coherence and unity in all areas of the club,” said Rouven Schröder. “As a first measure, I will work more closely with the team in the coming weeks in order to support Jan-Moritz Lichte in his new role, and to see to it that the fundamental operations around the senior squad are taken care of. We will need time, however, to further evaluate the situation and to implement long-term measures.”
