1st AWES Cup: FC Pune City Reserves trounce Dempo Juniors!

FC Pune City Reserves dominated from start to finish as they trounced Dempo SC Juniors 4-0 and put themselves in pole position in a Group C clash of the 1st AWES Cup, organised by Association for the Wellbeing of Elder Sports Persons and Dempo SC Juniors, at the Duler Football Stadium in Mapusa on Thursday.

FC Pune City Reserves led 3-0 at half-time with goals from Sajid Hossain, Buanthanglun Samte and Gani Nigam. Substitute Omega Vanlalhruaitluanga completed the rout in the second session to ensure that the visitors made the best possible start to their campaign.

The three points and big victory puts FC Pune City Reserves on top of the group table and they will now need only a draw against FC Bardez on September 11 to qualify as the top team for the semifinals. FC Bardez will need a victory while Dempo Juniors have already exited the tournament with two losses in a row.

FC Pune City, who have fielded their developmental squad for this tournament, were dominant all through. After a couple of near misses where Rahul Yadav, Ashique Kurunian and Buanthanglun all went close in the opening 15 minutes, Pune City took the lead in the 19th minute through Sajid Hossain whose half-volley after meeting a cross from Ashique sailed into the nets.

Pune City increased their lead just after the half an hour mark as Buanthanglun’s attempted cross turned into a goal and Gani Nigam made it 3-0 before the change of ends after he gave finishing touches to a pass from Ashique.

With the match in their pocket, FC Pune City Reserves took it easy in the second session but they still had time to score their fourth goal which crucially gives them an advantage going into the deciding round clash against FC Bardez. Pune’s fourth goal came in the 79th minute when substitute Omega Vanlalhruaitluanga made his presence felt almost immediately as he curled in a beauty from the left.

Earlier in the tournament, FC Bardez had defeated Dempo SC Juniors 3-0. FC Pune City Reserves’ 4-0 win puts them on top of the group and gives them an advantage going into the last round clash where they now need only a draw to qualify.
