2017 AFC Cup: Mohun Bagan duffer humiliating 2-5 defeat at Maziya R&SC in the Maldives!

Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan AC suffered a humiliating 2-5 defeat at the hands of Maldivian islanders Maziya Recreation & Sports Club at the National Stadium in Male on Wednesday afternoon.

Mohun Bagan had send a team of their fringe players and assistant coach Shankarlal Chakraborty to the Maldives and the end result proved that at this level of Asia, a reserve Indian side is just not good enough

Maziya took a 13th minute lead when Yasfaadh Habeeb scored from close range after the Mohun Bagan defence could not clear the ball. The home side doubled their lead when Mohamed Umair just had to tap in the ball in the 27th minute off Abdulla Asadhulla before Aleksandar Rakic made it 3-0 on the stroke of half time to somewhat seal the match.

Mohun Bagan reduced the deficit only three minutes into the second half following a corner the ball is headed on and Kingshuk Debnath puts the ball into an empty net.

In the 53rd minute Mohun Bagan conceded a penalty when keeper Pawan Kumar brought down Mohamed Umair in the area. Abdulla Asadhulla send Pawan the wrong way to give Maziya a 4-1 lead.

Things went from bad to worse as on the hour mark, Aleksandar Rakic’s left footed shot went in below keeper Pawan Kumar to give his team a 5-1 lead.

Maziya then conceded a penalty of their own as Samaam Gasim handled the ball and it was India striker Jeje Lalpekhlua, who reduced the deficit in the 78th minute.

In the end Maziya scored a big 5-2 win over Mohun Bagan, which means the Kolkata giants stay on three points while Maziya now have nine points like Bengaluru FC at the top of the AFC Cup – Group E standings.
