2018 FIFA World Cup – PQF: England win on penalties over Colombia!

The 2018 FIFA World Cup continued on Tuesday, July 3 evening with England creating history by winning their first-ever penalty shootout against a fighting Colombia at the Spartak Stadium in Moscow.

England had more of the ball in the first half as Colombia focused on defending but chances were rare at both ends as the game went into the break goalless.

In the second session things got aggressive with referee Geiger sometimes wrong with the judgement on the tough Colombians and the play acting English players.

In the 54th minute, he gave a soft penalty for Harry Kane being wrestled down by Barrios after a corner and it was Kane who scored his third penalty of the tournament, his sixth goal overall.

Thereafter it was a free for all with limited football until Colombia realised that they needed at least a goal to stay in the competition, but shots from Cuadrado and Uribe were all until a final corner saw Yerry Mina rising above everyone to equalise to the delights of the Colombians at the ground. The match went into extra-time.

In the first half of extra-time Colombia took the momentum forward but their finishing and fatigue let them down, while the same can be said about England who controlled the second session of extra-time.

The match went into penalties. After five goals, Jordan Henderson’s shot was saved by Ospina and one thought is the old rule England don’t win on penalties coming true again, then Uribe banged his shot against the crossbra and things were even again, Trippier scored but then Pickford saved Bacca’s shot. The final penalty was that of Eric Dier, Ospina gets his hands to it but the ball is in, England win in dramatic fashion, 4-3 on penalties to progress to the quarterfinals.
