2018 FIFA World Cup – Round of 16 the top draw on TV!

The latter half of the Round-of-16 of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia saw a clash between footballing heavyweights Brazil and Mexico, and a breathless encounter between Belgium and Japan, while Colombia and England took their tie all the way to the dramatic conclusion of a penalty shootout. Such pulse-quickening drama was the top draw on TV as the momentum of knockout FIFA World Cup football attracted predictably high audiences around the globe.

Match Day 18: Brazil v. Mexico, Belgium v. Japan

– The share of viewing for Globo’s live coverage of Brazil’s Round of 16 match against Mexico was 83.36%, beating the previous tournament high of 81.62% (Serbia v. Brazil). The peak audience was also the highest so far with 62.61 million. In terms of reach, a total of 73.77 million (or 36.45% of the potential TV audience in Brazil) saw at least some of Globo’s coverage. Live coverage also aired on SPORTV attracting a further 2.17 million viewers, giving a combined match average audience of 60.77 million viewers. Source: Globo

– An average audience of 19.31 million viewers (15.6% TVR) was recorded for night-time coverage (02:45 local time) of Japan v. Belgium on NHK. Dentsu report that the household rating for the match was 30.8%, the highest rating recorded for late night programs starting at 03:00, ahead of 30.5% for Japan v. Denmark at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. A share of 87.4% of all Japanese viewers at the time tuned in to the coverage, the highest of the tournament so far and the highest for a FIFA World Cup match in Japan since Denmark v. Japan (88.3%). – Coverage of Belgium’s Round of 16 match against Japan attracted a combined audience of 3.70 million viewers across Flemish-language channel EEN (2.19 million) and French-language channel La Une (1.51 million). This was the highest of the tournament so far, exceeding the combined audience recorded for all three Group Stage matches featuring the national team (the previous top audience being 3.51 million for Belgium v. Match Day 19: Sweden v. Switzerland, Colombia v. England

– 17.39 million viewers (28.9% TVR) tuned in to watch ITV’s live primetime coverage of England v. Colombia. The highest rated match of the tournament so far in the UK, it beat the audience for England’s opening group game against Tunisia on BBC 1 (13.73 million viewers, 22.8% TVR, 58.25% share). It also beat the highest rated England match from the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil (England v. Italy: 14.73 million viewers, 25.1% rating, 75.4% share). The broadcast achieved a share of 71.7%, almost six times the channel’s typical share of viewing (12.1%). The broadcast peaked at 24.42 million viewers at 21:52 at the conclusion of the penalty shoot-out and was the highest rated broadcast for both sport and non-sport programmes over the last 4 years, beating the 15.89 million viewers recorded for an episode of baking contest The Great British Bake Off on BBC1 (26.9% rating, 52.7% share). ITV reported that 1.26 million unique users accessed digital coverage of the match, producing a record 3.35 million live video views. Source: BARB

– Live coverage of Colombia v. England (beginning at 12:20 local time) achieved a combined rating of 26.57%, equating to a national audience of 11.79 million viewers. The majority of the audience watched on Caracol (21.55% rating) with Canal RCN delivering 5.02%. This was higher than all three of Colombia’s Group Stage matches, of which the largest combined rating was 26.3% for Colombia v. Japan (20.6% on Caracol and 5.7% on RCN). This was very slightly below the top audience from the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, when 11.81 million viewers (26.61% rating) watched the Brazil v. Colombia Quarter Final across RCN (7.8% rating) and Caracol (18.8%). Source: Kantar IBOPE

– TV4’s live afternoon (16:00 local time) coverage of the Round of 16 match between Sweden and Switzerland attracted an average audience of 2.64 million viewers (27.0% rating) and recorded a market share of 88.4%, the third highest of the tournament so far. Source: MMS

– Mediaset recorded its largest audience of the tournament so far for coverage of Colombia v. England. 9.06 million viewers (15.5% TVR, 41.1% share) watched the coverage across Canale 5 (8.66 million) and Mediset Extra (0.40 million), eclipsing the previous high of 8.47 million viewers (8.06 million on Canale 5, 0.40 million on Mediaset Extra) for coverage of Belgium v. Japan on the previous evening. The Canale 5 audience was higher than for any single broadcast for a neutral match during the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, with only the Semi-Finals and Final achieving higher audiences for Rai 1.
