A commemoration of freedom with football in Mizoram!

There has always been an essence of liberty that sports has provided to the human psyche. Whether it is on the pitch displayed by the indomitable spirits of athletes or off it through the impact of sporting organisations, it is an ethos that has existed from the early days of humanity.

And so on that note, as the whole of India prepares to commemorate its 75th year of freedom, it is only befitting that the pinnacle of our Independence Day spirit in Mizoram is celebrated with football.

On this Independence Day, liberty is celebrated by over nine thousand Mizo youths. Throughout the land, Zonal Football Associations, District FAs, culminating to the Mizoram Football Association, freedom is celebrated on the biggest scale with the Independence Day Football Tournament. That is 9,305 players, 409 teams, all competing in the name of independence.

The Independence Day Football Tournament in Aizawl is set up for the eight Mizoram Premier League clubs by the Mizoram Football Association. A tradition started in 1982, this is the oldest football competition currently under the MFA. However, it is not the only event with the MFA also organising the I-Day Veteran and I-Day Women’s Football Tournaments.

The District FA’s have autonomy in organising I-Day celebration tournaments within their respective jurisdictions. The result is a festival of football throughout the state, with multiple competitions taking place in numerous venues.
