AFC and ZOLL organise informative webinar on sudden cardiac arrest!

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and ZOLL successfully organised a webinar focused on sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) with the theme ‘Keep Your Heart Safe During Sports’ that was attended by 800 participants.

Key speakers AFC Chairperson Dato’ Dr. Gurcharan Singh, FIFA medical officer Dr. Jens Kleinefeld, who saved Danish footballer Christian Eriksen’s life from SCA at the Euro 2020, and Sports Safety Committee member Dr. Cheah Si Oon presented key information pertaining to SCA at the highly engaging webinar.

AFC General Secretary Dato’ Windsor John said in his opening address: “In June this year, the world was shocked to see Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen, in the prime of his career, collapse on the pitch after suffering a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening Euro 2020 match with Finland in Copenhagen.

“The footballing world held a collective and hopeful breath as Eriksen made a recovery, all thanks to the expert and urgent care rendered by medical professionals.

“There is no denying that all of you play a critical role in ensuring the appropriate administration of medical procedures during an emergency, which can make the key difference between life and death.”

Dr. Kleinefeld started his presentation by introducing video examples and case studies of SCAs during football matches and showed instances and symptoms of SCAs. He further elaborated on how immediate and decisive action can save a player’s life.

Dato’ Dr. Gurcharan Singh also shared statistics and data related to SCA while emphasising the importance of having an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) at sports events.

The webinar continued with Dr. Cheah sharing her expertise on heat stroke management and how it relates to SCA before the webinar concluded with a Q&A session.
