AFC Cup qualifiers: Club Valencia host Mohun Bagan in Male, Maldives!

Maldives FA Cup winners Club Valencia host Indian Federation Cup champions Mohun Bagan AC in the first leg of the 2017 AFC Cup – South Asia final round qualifiers at the National Stadium in Malé on Tuesday.

Mohun Bagan have travelled to the islands without their head coach Sanjoy Sen and some of their key players in Sony Norde, Jeje Lalpekhlua and Debjit Majumder; but despite that fact the Mariners are not taking the tie lightly.

At the pre-match press conference the clubs assistant coach Sankarlal Chakraborty said, “We are 100% prepared for the game against Valencia.”

And went on to say, “we read on the news that Valencia is a very good team and they have very good foreign players too, but we are only here to win the match.”

While Club Valencia got the better of Thimphu City FC, the champions of Bhutan; Mohun Bagan twice defeated Sri Lankan champions Colombo FC 2-1 to progress to the final round of the qualifiers.

And the Kolkata side will hope to take a favourable result back to India ahead of the return leg of the tie on Tuesday, February 28 at the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium in Kolkata.

The winner of the playoff tie will qualify for the 2017 AFC Cup – South Asia group stage -Group E to join 2016 AFC Cup runners-up and Indian I-League champions Bengaluru FC, Maldives Premier League champions Maziya S&RC and Bangladesh champions Dhaka Abahani.
