AFC Elite Referee Instructor Certification & Seminar aim to elevate standards!

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC)’s commitment to establish the best possible conditions for AFC match officials to thrive was further underlined on Thursday through the commencement of several class leading initiatives all aimed at ensuring the highest refereeing standards.

Held from November 3 to 5, 2022, three marquee events have been organised simultaneously namely the AFC Elite Referee Instructor Certification 2022, the AFC Elite Referee Instructor Seminar 2022 as well as the AFC Elite Referee Instructor Certification (Futsal) 2022.

The programmes, which represent the first physical sessions to be conducted since the start of the pandemic, were also held fresh off the heels of the two-day AFC Referee Assessor Seminar 2022, which concluded on Wednesday.

The AFC Elite Referee Instructor Certification and Seminar played host to 30 participants, with 19 attending the seminar (including one online) and 11 sitting for the certification.

The Instructor Certification included written and spoken English evaluations, as well as technical evaluations on match preparation and debriefing, tests on the Laws of the Game and video match incidents, technical topic presentations, and conducting practical training sessions.

The practical sessions were particularly well received by the Instructor Certification participants who were tasked to carry out real-time practical training sessions, comprising 22 players, six Referees and six Assistant Referees, with the instant feedback system in place.

Similarly, the Elite Referee Instructor Seminar included engaging and constructive dialogue on organising training sessions as participants were also provided with the chance to present case studies and key takeaways to further hone their ability to conduct future seminars for the Continent’s match officials.

Participants were also provided with greater clarity on the expectations of the AFC as well as their roles and responsibilities in ensuring the long-term success of Asian match officials, so many of whom continue to grace some of the biggest stages in world football, as outlined in the AFC’s Vision and Mission.

The programmes were conducted by experienced and world renowned instructors including Raymond Olivier from the UK, AlTraifi Ali Ahmed from Saudi Arabia, Subkhiddin Mohd Salleh and Widiya Habibah Shamsuri from Malaysia, Abdullaev Farkhad from Uzbekistan, John Chia from Singapore and Japan’s Sachiko Yamagishi, a five-time AFC Women’s Referee of the Year recipient.

Meanwhile, under the guidance of Badrul Hisham Kalam from Malaysia, and Pedro Galan from Spain, 16 participants attended the Elite Referee Instructor Certification (Futsal) 2022, held concurrently with their football counterparts, focusing on similar sessions and topics.
