The AFC Futsal Goalkeeping Technical Workshop concluded on Friday, reiterating the Asian Football Confederation (AFC)’s commitment to providing tailored support to its Member Associations.
Held from September 7 to 11, the workshop featured FIFA Technical Expert Antonio Garcia who served as an advisor. His decade-long exposure to the Asian futsal landscape provided the working group members with a balanced mix of global and regional perspectives.
Ensuring clear alignment and seamless progression between coaching levels, with particular focus on course content and coaching methodology, the workshop focused on developing the new syllabus for Level 2 of the AFC Futsal Goalkeeping Coaching Certificate Course, while simultaneously reviewing and updating the existing Level 1 curriculum.
The workshop commenced on Monday with AFC Deputy Technical Director Takeshi Ono delivering an opening lecture on key principles and approaches shaping modern coach education, providing a guiding framework for the workshop.
In the following days, the working group engaged in intensive discussions to design and refine the course structure and learning outcomes and contents, while sharpening the alignment between Levels 1 and 2.
In a bid to produce visual learning material to complement the theoretical components, the workshop also conducted a dedicated recording session, focusing particularly on exclusive coaching and training techniques for goalkeepers.
“It was a great opportunity to contribute alongside my fellow specialists and colleagues in Asia,” said Garcia.
“My intention was not to teach, but to share different ideas and perspectives that could enrich the work of the group, and I would be very happy if some of these ideas can serve as useful references for their work.”
Working Group member Michael Petros said: “It was extremely valuable to come together, collaborate and move our area of expertise forward, particularly at a time when the role and demands of the futsal goalkeeper have changed so significantly in recent years.”
Besides successfully charting the new AFC Futsal Goalkeeping Coaching Certificate Course – Level 2 and amending the existing Level 1 course, the workshop also served as an excellent opportunity for the participants to experiment with modern tutoring and coach education approaches.
