The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa hosted a high-level meeting with His Excellency Harin Fernando, the Sri Lankan Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, on Wednesday in Doha, Qatar, on the sidelines of the ongoing AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023.
The meeting was attended by key figures from both the AFC and Sri Lankan football leadership, including Jaswar Umar, President of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL); His Excellency Mohamed Mafaz Mohideen, Sri Lankan Ambassador to Qatar; Dr. Shemal Fernando, Director General of the Department of Sports Development under the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs of Sri Lanka; and Datuk Seri Sri Windsor John, the General Secretary of the AFC.
Sheikh Salman warmly welcomed the distinguished Sri Lankan delegation and commended their efforts in advancing Sri Lankan football. He highlighted the collaborative spirit between the Ministry of Sports and Youth and the FFSL in enhancing various aspects of the sport within the country.
Shaikh Salman also outlined the AFC’s strategic initiatives aimed at achieving comprehensive development in Asian football at all levels. He emphasised the importance of fostering partnerships between the AFC and the Member Associations to contribute to the growth of the sport on the continental stage.
The meeting also focused on the future plans for the development of Sri Lankan football. The AFC President praised the distinctive aspects and ambitious goals of these plans, stressing the importance of unity and solidarity within the country’s football community for the greater good of the sport.
The Sri Lankan Minister of Sports and Youth congratulated Shaikh Salman on the astounding success of the ongoing AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023. He expressed Sri Lanka’s commitment to actively engage with the AFC’s ongoing efforts, aiming to shape a promising future for Asian football.
