AFC to test VAR Light concept at the 2021 AFC Women’s Club Championship!

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) will trial the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), VAR Light concept at the 2021 AFC Women’s Club Championship – Pilot Tournament (West) in Jordan from November 7 to 13.

As part of the AFC’s efforts to adopt more technological advances in the sport, the AFC will test the new concept with the aim of creating more affordable VAR systems which can be used at all levels in football.

The VAR Light trials will focus on exploring and evaluating the various cost-effective technology solutions available, while also assessing the impact they will have on football matches as compared to the conventional VAR.

This will be the first time the VAR Light concept will be tested in a competition in Asia and the AFC, who is part of the FIFA Working Group for Innovation Excellence, will report their findings following the conclusion of the 2021 AFC Women’s Club Championship – Pilot Tournament (West).

Four participating clubs – host side Amman Club, FC Bunyodkor from Uzbekistan, Iran’s Shahrdari Sirjan and Sree Gokulam Kerala FC from India – are scheduled to compete in this year’s edition of the pilot tournament, ahead of the impending launch of the AFC Women’s Champions League within the next few years.
