AFC VAR Course makes new breakthrough with real-time simulator experience!

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC)’s latest Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Course set a new milestone with the use of an online simulator to provide participants with case studies from competitions allowing real-time VAR processes to be reproduced.

During the simulator sessions, which featured simple and complex situations from matches, the main TV feed and VAR output were shown concurrently to allow participants appointed as Referees, VARs and AVARs to experience utilising VAR in real-time.

The Course comprised sessions for FIFA-listed Video Match Officials (VMOs) from March 14 to 15 and a VAR Refresher Course for Elite VMOs from March 16 to 18. It saw 79 match officials from 14 Member Associations (MAs) participate over five days.

The first session involved 15 Referees and 10 Assistant Referees consisting of 22 men and three women. It included non-elite VMOs, who are not on the AFC Elite Panel but were nominated by MAs as VMOs on the FIFA list.

Additionally, it also featured Referee Academy graduates, currently in the AFC Elite Panel, who were nominated as VMOs by MAs.

The VAR Refresher Course hosted 34 referees and 20 assistant referees (52 men and two women), who have been shortlisted for the upcoming 2022 AFC U23 Asian Cup – Uzbekistan which kicks-off with full VAR implementation.

The course also provided tailor-made support for match officials to enhance their knowledge with the aim of developing match officials who have the potential to officiate on the world’s biggest stages.
