The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and its Member Associations (MAs) celebrated the 7th AFC Women’s Football Day today by launching a series of exciting activities focused on growing the passion for football as well as paying tribute to the contributions of medical frontliners.
Coinciding with the International Women’s Day, 34 MAs have pledged to join the annual celebrations with fun-filled initiatives including tournaments, workshops and webinars, while putting in place strict hygiene protocols and health regulations in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
More than 19,000 participants, including children, parents, women’s national players, coaches and professors are expected to be involved this year to further promote women’s football, with nine MAs – Bhutan, Cambodia, Guam, India, Kyrgyz Republic, Northern Mariana Islands, Palestine, Singapore and Vietnam – joining the celebrations for the seventh straight year.
AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa said: “Women’s football in Asia has made significant progress in recent years and our success is testament to the collective efforts and the years of hard work from AFC’s Member Associations to ensure the continued growth of the women’s game.
“The AFC has outlined its Vision to ensure that football remains the number one sport in Asia and our commitment towards strengthening the foundation of the women’s game by all accounts continues to play a pivotal role in achieving that ambition.
“The AFC’s determination to remain a model Confederation in world football has never been stronger and we call on everyone to pay tribute to the women in Asian football for their significant contributions in promoting and developing our great game.”
The Hong Kong Football Association will launch a Female Youth Football Medicine Webinar while the Kyrgyz Football Union will pay tribute to female medical frontliners and teachers.
Meanwhile, the Mongolian Football Federation and the National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam will host child safeguarding seminars while the Palestine Football Association has invited young players from different clubs to play friendly matches.
As part of efforts to promote women working in football and in recognition of their hard work, Football Australia will create profiles of all its female staff members, which details their football journey.
Among some of the other activities launched by the AFC’s MAs include the All India Football Federation organising online workshops while the Guam Football Association has planned an entire month of engaging and diverse activities.
