Andre Villas-Boas elected new chairman of FC Porto!

André Villas-Boas is the new president of FC Porto. List B was the most voted in the elections for the Club’s Governing Bodies for the quadrennium 2024-2028, which took place this Saturday at Estádio do Dragão. 26,876 members elected the 32nd leader of the institution.

The movement “Só há um Porto” [There is only one Porto], led by the former coach that helped the team win the Europa League in 2011, gathered 21,489 votes from members and beat the competition of list A, led by Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa (5,224 votes), and list C, led by Nuno Lobo (53 votes). List D, headed by Miguel Brás da Cunha, was only a candidate for the Superior Council.

Chairman

Luís André de Pina Cabral e Villas-Boas was born in Porto in 1977. He is member No. 7,616. With family roots closely linked to the foundation of the club, both with António Nicolau d’Almeida and José Monteiro da Costa, the club was instilled in his early years of life. The pride in being a blue and white fan and the passion for football burned in him from an early age and Estádio das Antas was a frequent destination.

The technicalities of the game and training entered the teenager’s life very quickly. In a thoughtful and conscious act, at the age of 17, he questioned the then coach of FC Porto, Bobby Robson. His idol Domingos was a topic of conversation. Surprised by what he had heard, Robson introduced the young aspirant to the world of football, encouraged him to obtain training and to attend coaching courses, investing in his training in Portugal and abroad.

Villas-Boas started his career in FC Porto’s youth teams, supervised all levels from starters to juniors and performed various technical functions at the club, from scouting to observing opponents. The arrival of José Mourinho brought him new responsibilities, when he joined the Special One’s coaching team as an observer of opponents. Thus, during the five seasons in which the club won several national and international titles, namely the 2002/03 UEFA Cup and the 2003/04 Champions League, helped enrich a vast curriculum.

He made his debut as head coach at Académica de Coimbra in 2009, and soon showed the potential seen in him. This path led him to receive an invitation to take charge of FC Porto. It was made official on June 2, 2010. In a single year, André Villas-Boas won the Super Cup Cândido de Oliveira, the National Championship – ending the season unbeaten, celebrating the victory at the home of the biggest rival, Benfica –, a Portuguese Cup and the Europa League.

With the international competition won, he also became the youngest coach ever to win a European competition. As a recognition of his success, but, above all, recognizing his love for the club, FC Porto decided to honour him in 2011 with a Golden Dragon, a trophy he received from the hands of Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa himself, before gracing the blue and white fans with a speech that is still remembered today by the blue and white universe.

He continued his career in several renowned clubs of European and world football, such as Chelsea FC, Tottenham Hotspur, FC Zenit Saint Petersburg, Shanghai SIPG or Olympique Marseille.

He began preparing the candidacy for the presidency of Futebol Clube do Porto two years ago, when he assembled a team with the necessary skills and competences. Gathering the enthusiastic support of the majority of voters, André Villas-Boas aims at modernity, old values, rigor, planning, dedication and work that FC Porto deserves, to honour and keep the club on a path of unparalleled victories.
