Former Indian Super League champions ATK have announced the signing of Brazilian defender Gerson Vieira from rivals Mumbai City FC for the 2018/19 season.
25 year old Porto Alegre-born Gerson Fraga Vieira came through the youth ranks of Brazilian giants Gremio Porto Alegre, where he also made his professional debut in 2012. He spend four seasons at Gremio, but mainly on loan at Oeste FC, Red Bull Brasil, CA Atenas and again Red Bull Brasil.
“Vieira is a very versatile and exciting player. His talent and his leadership skills will impact the team in a very positive way. I welcome him to the ATK family,” said ATK head coach Steve Coppell.
Gerson is a former youth international, who captain Brazil at Under-17 level, playing alongside now Selecao stars like Neymar and Philippe Coutinho.
Gerson had signed in 2016 for Mumbai City FC and was a key member of their squad on their way in topping the regular ISL-3 season before losing to ATK in the semifinals.
Last season Gerson was back in Mumbai after a stint in Atletico Tubarao and played in 17 of the 18 league games. He then spend time at Japanese J2 League side Renofa Yamaguchi and now returns to India.
“I am delighted to be back in India and elated to be signed by ATK. I am looking forward to meet the team and want to bring the cup back to the club,” Gerson Vieira said in an official ATK statement.
