ATK Mohun Bagan make huge signing with Hugo Boumous from Mumbai City FC!

Former Indian Super League champions ATK Mohun Bagan have announced the spectacular signing of attacking midfielder Hugo Boumous from current ISL champions Mumbai City FC.

The transfer fee is said to be in the region of INR 2,1 crores, the highest-ever paid for a transfer within Indian football.

The announcement of the Hugo Boumous signing comes following the signings of India international Amrinder Singh, Ashutosh Mehta and Liston Colaco besides youngster Deepak Tangri and Finnish international Joni Kauko.

The 25-year old French-Moroccan joins the Mariners off the back of an excellent 2020-21 season with the Islanders, which saw him winning the ISL Shield and league title.

Having graduated from the youth set up at Stade Lavallois in France, Boumous signed his first professional contract with the club in May 2015 and made his debut later that year. Boumous was later signed at Moroccan club Moghreb Tétouan in 2016 by then head coach Sergio Lobera. He went on to play for the club for a season and a half, playing his debut campaign at Moghreb under the Spaniard’s tutelage.

In January 2018, he followed Lobera to FC Goa, where Boumous managed to register an impressive tally of 20 goals and 17 assists in 47 games across all competitions, winning the ISL League Shield (2019-20) and the Super Cup (2019) in the process and he then moved with Lobera to Mumbai City FC.

Hugo Boumous on his move said, “I know Kolkata as the Mecca of Indian football. I am happy to sign with the city’s traditional and successful club, ATK Mohun Bagan. I have heard that the joy of playing in front of millions of supporters of the Green-Maroon team in Yuba Bharati is different and I shall play this time to win [for] them.”

“I am always hungry to win the trophy. I have brought success to the clubs that I have played for. And I shall keep this in mind as I play again. I will do my best to win. I am looking forward to seeing the passion and excitement of the Green Maroon supporters after winning the match. Sanjiv Goenka, the principal owner of the team, inspired me to come to Kolkata. I am grateful to him. My goal is to win the AFC Cup and the Hero Indian Super League.”

“Both scoring goals and helping to score goals are equally rewarding. I get pleasure from both. Team’s victory is the main purpose. That is not possible without goals,” Boumous added.

ATK Mohun Bagan head coach Antonio Lopez Habas said, “Hugo is a very fast and technically successful footballer. His personal skills are also very good. Hugo can create attacks as well as counter attacks. That is why he is so successful. With the arrival of Hugo, the strength of the team increased a lot.”
