Bundesliga side Bayer 04 Leverkusen have confirmed that club CEO Rudi Völler will step down from his position at the end of his contract. Völler’s contract will expire next year.
The 60-year-old former Germany striker and 1990 FIFA World Cup winner joined Leverkusen in 1994 as a player just to retire from professional football two years later and to become the Sporting Director of the club.
He left the club in 2000 to stand in as the new German national team head coach. Völler led the German national team to the final of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where they suffered a defeat to Brazil. He then stepped down from his post after a disappointing UEFA EURO 2004 campaign when Germany bowed out in the group stages.
The 1993 UEFA Champions League winner then had a short spell as head coach at Italian side AS Roma, before he returned to Germany to become once again take over as Sporting Director at Bayer Leverkusen.
Völler was promoted to the position of CEO in 2018 to build a strong club management alongside Spaniard Fernando Carro.
