Bengaluru FC & Sreenidi Deccan FC play out 1-1 draw in Stafford Challenge Cup opener!

Bengaluru FC began their Stafford Challenge Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against Sreenidi Deccan FC, at the Bangalore Football Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday. Harmanpreet Singh’s early goal for the Blues was canceled out by Khamchinkhup Hangzo’s strike in the 69th minute.

Earlier, Bengaluru first-team Assistant Coach Naushad Moosa, in charge of the squad for the Stafford Challenge Cup, named a side featuring Ashish Jha, Amay Morajkar, Damaitphang Lyngdoh, Harmanpreet and goalkeeper Lara Sharma. Felixson Fernandes and Clarence Fernandes manned the Blues’ backline, while new signing Shreyas Ketkar made his debut.

Bengaluru started the brighter of the two outfits and took the lead less than a quarter of an hour into the game when Harmanpreet Singh found himself at the end of a cross from Ashish. Unmarked in the six-yard box, the striker made no mistake and slotted past Jaspreet Singh. The Blues continued to create chances with good movement and passing, as well as defensive resilience at the other end to see out the half and go into the break with the lead.

Into the second period, the Blues continued to push forward, with Thoi Singh going close in the 55th minute when his free kick was parried away by Jaspreet. Ashish found himself in the thick of things when he found himself at the end of a misplaced clearance in the box, but dragged his shot wide.

Sreenidi Deccan pulled level in the 69th minute when Hangzo placed a shot past Lara from distance. Bengaluru rang in two changes, with Satendra Singh replacing Thoi, while Lalhmingchhuanga replaced Shreyas Ketkar later on. Both sides continued to push for the winner but the spoils were shared.

Bengaluru FC return to action on Sunday, February 26 against Delhi FC at the Bangalore Football Stadium.
