Bengaluru FC’s Marco Pezzaiuoli: It was not an easy game, but we were the better team!

Bengaluru FC head coach Marco Pezzaiuoli spoke about his side’s defeat of Club Eagles, progression to the Group Stages of the AFC Cup, and more….

On the game against Club Eagles…

It was a long journey to play this game, for both teams, and we are happy to be in the group stage. It was not easy for us as our last game was in February, and we are still missing match practice. That said, I think we were the better team and Club Eagles looked dangerous only on corners. We could’ve taken the lead early on but missed some big chances.

I am not too happy with the number of long balls that were played by our team in the first half and we tried to rectify that after the break. It is a huge compliment to my team that they came into this game after a long holiday, prepared well and made it to the group stage. Overall, I think we were the better team, we tried to create many chances but the finishing was lacking.

On the performances of the new signings…

We have quite a few new players in the team. Take the defence for example, we had three new players in the backline and in the midfield we had two new signings. Only in attack did we have players who are used to playing together. It takes time to get to know each and we are training daily to get there, but what’s important is to improve in that area by playing many games.

We are not at our 100% right now because our season starts only on November 19, and we are just getting started. That said, we prepared as best as we could, integrated the new players well and I am happy with the win today.

On the upcoming game against ATK Mohun Bagan…

ATK Mohun Bagan are also coming in from a holiday, have added new players to the squad but also parted ways with an important player in Sandesh Jhingan. We will prepare as best as we can, as it’ll be a difficult game. All the teams in our group are strong, not just ATK Mohun Bagan. We focus on ATK right now as we play them next. It is a clash of Indian clubs and we’ll try to get the better of them on the pitch.
