Bengaluru FC’s Marco Pezzaiuoli: We’re disappointed, we created many chances & scored a goal that wasn’t given!

Bengaluru FC head coach Marco Pezzaiuoli spoke about the Blues’ goalless draw against Bashundhara Kings, the disallowed goal and more…

On the game against Bashundhara Kings…

Despite this being our third game in the space of a week, I think we played very well against the best team from Bangladesh. We created a number of chances, especially in the second half, and we kept the ball well, something not many clubs do these days.

In football, it is easier to defend than to create good chances with the ball, and we did that. We will now rest, get back to training and be prepared for our next game.

On Alan Costa’s disallowed goal…

We should have had a goal rightfully given to us. I saw the replays on the television after the game and the ball crossed the goal line from Alan Costa’s header, in the second half. This is why we have linesmen in the game and that should have been given. That’s also why we need to take the help of technology in football.

The club has invested a lot of money in the team, we have come to Maldives for a second time in the space of a few months and I am not sure why the AFC doesn’t make use of technology like every other league across the world. It is not just us who’ve spent a lot of money, every other club in this competition has.

My players showed great spirit against Bashundhara Kings, played a great game in the second half, created a lot of chances and scored a goal that wasn’t given. That’s just very disappointing at the end of the day.

On the Blues finding their groove in the second half…

Sometimes when you are tired, it is natural to take time to get into the game. We’ve trained as best as we could, but the legs do tend to feel heavy when you are playing a third game in such a short period of time.

On the way the team is shaping up…

Before the AFC Cup, we last played a competitive game in February, and I can see the team improving step by step with each match. Those who watched the game against Bashundhara Kings will be happy to see a team that takes charge, plays offensive football and fights till the end.

On the lack of goals from the skipper…

The question shouldn’t be about Sunil [Chhetri] not scoring goals. This is a team game, not an individual sport. As the striker, his role isn’t just to score goals but also to make space and create chances for others, and he does that very well. Football is a team sport, he is a player of a very high quality and we’re very happy to have him in the team.
