Borussia Mönchengladbach sign teenage defender Lukas Ullrich!

Defender Lukas Ullrich will join Borussia Mönchengladbach on a free transfer from Hertha BSC for next season. The 19-year-old has signed a contract valid until June 30, 2027 with the Foals.

“Lukas is a promising and talented youngster,” said sporting director Roland Virkus. “He has developed a lot at Hertha, but also with Germany U-19s, who he captains. He’s an exciting prospect and we’re pleased that he’s decided to join us.” Ullrich himself commented: “Borussia is a big club. I’m excited to learn from the experienced players here and to then get started.”

The Berlin-born defender joined Hertha BSC from Borussia Friedrichsfelde aged 11 in summer 2015. He went on to play for all of Hertha’s youth sides. He played 16 times in the U19s Bundesliga last season, scoring five goals. He completed the full 90 minutes in all three championship play-off matches, where Hertha lost 2-1 in the final to BVB. Ullrich also featured three times in the U19s DFB-Pokal.

Ullrich has been part of Hertha’s first team since the start of this season, though he is yet to make his Bundesliga debut. He has featured 18 times for their U-23s in the Regionalliga Nordost this term, scoring two goals and setting up a further four. He also made three appearances for the U-19s in the regular league season (1 goal).

The left-back has won 19 caps in total for various Germany youth sides: two for the U-17s (no goals), seven for the U-18s (2 goals) and 10 for the U-19s (6 goals).
