Chennaiyin FC faced their fourth defeat of the season as they went down 0-3 against FC Goa in the 2023-24 Indian Super League match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Sunday.
Boris Singh Thangjam scored the first goal of the match for FC Goa in the 13th minute before Rowllin Borges doubled the lead of the away team with a fine strike in the 24th minute of the match. Udanta Singh scored the third in the 72nd minute.
Chennaiyin started the match with positive intent but it was FC Goa, who opened the scoring through a precise volley by Boris Singh on the pass of Jay Gupta from the left flank. The away team continued putting pressure on Chennaiyin and soon increased their lead when Rowllin Borges took a shot from outside the 18-yard box and successfully sent the ball into the back of the net.
The second half saw Owen Coyle’s men coming out all guns blazing and stitching a string of neat passes before Vincy Barretto (58the minute) took a shot from the centre of the box that narrowly missed the post. Vincy found himself in the centre of action again in the very next minute as his attempt at goal from outside the box hit the left post.
Jordan Murray had a fine chance of scoring the first goal in the match for Chennaiyin FC as he went 1v1 against goalkeeper Arshdeep Singh after a brilliant pass by Ryan Edwards. However, the goalkeeper made a fine save before Udanta got the ball outside the home team’s box and scored a wonderful goal to put the game to bed.
Chennaiyin FC will now look for a win when they host East Bengal FC after the break on Saturday, 25 November, while FC Goa will go up against Jamshedpur FC on Monday, November 27.
