Chennaiyin FC suffer a narrow 0-1 Super Cup loss against Mumbai City FC!

Chennaiyin FC put up a good show but went down fighting 0-1 against Mumbai City FC in their final Super Cup 2023 Group D match at the Payyanad Stadium in Manjeri, Kerala on Wednesday.

Ayush Chhikara scored the only goal of the match in the 33rd minute.

Despite a win, Mumbai City FC, however, failed to make it to the semifinals with NorthEast United FC progressing after their 6-3 against Churchill Brothers in another Group D match.

A high-voltage clash lived up to its expectations as the ball kept moving consistently from one half to another with both teams going all out from the word go. Chennaiyin FC head coach Thomas Brdaric made one change to their starting eleven as he brought in star midfielder Abdenasser El Khayati for his first match of the competition.

While both teams played aggressively in search of an opener, it was Mumbai City FC who managed to break the deadlock when Chhikara tapped a Bipin Singh cross into the post.

After the break, the Marina Machans had a close chance for an equaliser in the 52nd minute as Edwin Sydney Vanspaul crossed the ball from just outside the box but Kwame Karikari lost his marker to head it on target. And later, nine minutes before the end, a rebounded corner fell to substitute Mohammed Rafique, whose shot brushed the crossbar before going out.
