Christopher Lenz joins RB Leipzig!

RB Leipzig have completed their tenth summer signing, two days before the transfer window closes. Christopher Lenz has joined RB Leipzig from Eintracht Frankfurt. He has signed a one-year deal with the option of a further year, and will wear the number 3 shirt at RBL.

The 28-year-old generally plays as a left-back, but can also be used as a left midfielder or as a centre-back.

RB Leipzig managing director of sport Max Eberl said, “By signing Christopher Lenz we have managed to fill the last gap in our squad. He will be an important option for us at left-back. Chris has developed brilliantly over the past few years, has lots of experience and a great mentality.”

“He can play as part of both a back-four and a back-three/five. He’s good on the ball, covers lots of ground and wins a lot of tackles. On top of that, he’s a very clever defender. We now have at least two players for every position and do not need to bring any more players in.”

Christopher Lenz said, “I’m really pleased to be at RB Leipzig, one of the best clubs in the Bundesliga. The important thing now is that I settle in quickly here. I want to get going right away. We’ve got lots to aim for this season and I want to play my part in the team reaching our goals.”

The born-and-bred Berliner learnt the ropes in the youth teams of Tennis Borussia Berlin and Hertha BSC among others, before he transferred to the academy of Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2012. After 109 Regionalliga West appearances for Borussia’s second team, as well as a total of twelve matches for Germany’s U-18s and U-19s, Christopher Lenz returned to the capital in summer 2016 and joined 1.FC Union Berlin. After half a year at Union, he spent one and a half years on loan at Holstein Kiel.

During the 2018/19 season, the left footer remained at 1.FC Union and gradually established himself as a first-team regular. He was promoted to the Bundesliga with Union at the end of the season and made his top-flight debut on August 18, 2019. The opponents? RB Leipzig, who won 4-0 in Berlin.

In summer 2021, Christopher Lenz signed for Eintracht Frankfurt and achieved his biggest success so far with the Hesse outfit, when he won the UEFA Europa League in May 2022. He came on as a substitute in extra time against Glasgow Rangers (RB Leipzig’s semifinal opponents) and converted Eintracht’s first attempt in the penalty shootout.
