CONMEBOL award AF Chapecoense the 2016 Copa Sudamericana title!

af-chapecoenseThe South American football confederation CONMEBOL today officially awarded Brazilian football club AF Chapecoense with the 2016 Copa Sudamericana title after their aircraft had crashed last week close to the Medellin airport in Colombia on way to the final first leg against Atletico National.

According to the CONMEBOL in an official statement it said that the title comes “as a posthumous homage to the victims of the fatal crash that leaves our sport in mourning.”

“For CONMEBOL there is no greater example of the ‘spirit of peace, understanding and fair play’ set forth as an objective of our institution than the solidarity, consideration and respect shown by Atletico National towards its brothers from Chapecoense,” a CONMEBOL statement said.

In the crash on Monday, November 28; 71 people including 19 players had died with only six people surviving the crash amongst them only three players of AF Chapecoense.

Since the crash, the club AF Chapecoense and the City of Chapeco in Brazil have received a lot of support or willingness to help from around the world as the football world has come closer in this tragedy.
