Delhi FC score 2-1 win over Assam Rifles in Bordoloi Trophy!

After Delhi FC emerged victors in their first match of the Bordoloi Trophy against Assam Police Blues with a comfortable 2-0 victory, they played their second fixture against Assam Rifles.

In group B, Delhi FC are accompanied by Daimalu Club, Assam Police Blues, and Assam Rifles.

The Assam Rifles, Delhi FC’s opponents, are the oldest branch of the Indian Army, with their history dating back to 1835. As such, the Assam Rifles football team has a rich history in Indian football as they are longtime participants in the Durand Cup and Bordoloi Trophy. They have won the Bordoloi Trophy once, while finishing runners-up on five occasions. The Assam Rifles have also won the Assam State Premier League three times.

As usual, Delhi FC started brightly, putting pressure on the opposition early on.

Assam Rifles won a free-kick in the 23rd minute, which came straight into the box, and goalkeeper Suraj Mallick gathered with authority. He then had the awareness to start a counter-attack and distributed to the right quickly. Delhi FC then won a free-kick, which subsequently was delivered into the box for Arthur Kouassi to head perfectly, making it 1-0 to Delhi FC.

Delhi FC kept the pressure up, not allowing Assam Rifles into the game and forcing them backwards.

Delhi FC had plenty of half chances in the first half, but they went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

They started the second half with the high-press again, and it immediately came to fruition as they forced Assam Rifles into a mistake at the back. Laiwang chased a seemingly hopeless ball, but it put the defender off balance and his backpass was short. Laiwang got there ahead of the goalkeeper and slotted it into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.

Delhi FC continued to dominate, and even though Assam Rifles pulled one back and made it 2-1, it wasn’t enough to get anything out of the game.

It ended 2-1 in favour of Delhi FC, who notched up their second successive win. They will now play their next game against Daimalu Club on March 30.
