DFB clears first use of RefCam in the Bundesliga!

This Sunday, the RefCam celebrates its Bundesliga-Premiere. In the encounter between Eintracht Frankfurt and VfL Wolfsburg (from 3.30pm, live on DAZN), the small special camera is attached to the referee’s headset and films the game from his perspective. The occasion is a production of the DFL’s international product portfolio, in which the Referees team is accompanied.

FIFA Referee Daniel Schlager already had the RefCam in December in the 3rd Division (3.Liga) and will now wear them again for the entire game. In addition, there is sound wiring to reproduce the perspective of the referee in an authentic and up-close way.

The aim is to use the recorded material for the DFL’s monthly Bundesliga format. The 26-minute report entitled “Referees Mic’d up – Bundesliga” will be made available to the DFL’s national and international media partners for publication from March 12. The images will therefore not be broadcast in direct connection with the broadcast of the match.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) approved the use of the RefCam in close coordination between DFB Schiri GmbH, the DFL and the clubs involved.

The use of the RefCam is primarily about documentation purposes and additional transparency for the public, as well as further training and improvement opportunities for referees. The new perspective on the pitch is intended to create more understanding of the difficult task of the referees.
