DSK Shivajians go down 0-4 to Mohun Bagan in Federation Cup opener!

In their opening Group B game, DSK Shivajians FC went down by a margin 0-4 to Mohun Bagan. While Balwant Singh opened the scoring in the 24th minute, he doubled his tally on the 71st minute. Darryl Duffy found the net between Balwant’s goals while Jeje Lalpekhlua made it four for the Kolkata side.

Starting off the stronger side from the get-go, Mohun Bagan dominated proceedings early on with DSK Shivajians being restricted to long balls and counters. With a lot of space between the DSK Shivajians defence and midfield, Mohun Bagan took advantage of this fact to run riot through the combination of Katsumi Yusa, Darryl Duffy, Balwant Singh and Sony Norde. Balwant opened the scoring in the 24th minute, but this was by no means decisive with DSK Shivajians giving the I-League runners-up a fitting response. The 32nd minute saw a moment of magic from Sanju Pradhan who cut past five defenders to lay it off to Holicharan Narzary, only to see the Assamese forward’s shot blocked by Pritam Kotal in the Mohun Bagan defence.

Milan Singh saw his shot go inches wide only three minutes later, showcasing a visibly agitated Sanjoy Sen on the Mohun Bagan bench. The star of the half was, however, keeper Soram Poirei who made half a dozen saves, to keep the scoreline at just 1-0, but DSK Shivajians by no means out of it.

The second half began in a wham-bam manner with a penalty shout by DSK Shivajians as Kim Song-Yong was seemingly brought down in the box. Juan Quero, looking to bring his team level also took two shots at goal around the 60th minute mark, with Shilton Paul looking visibly angry with his defenders. Darryl Duffy, however, put his team firmly in the driving seat on the 66th minute as he nodded in a ball that beat everyone. Moments later, Balwant made it three for the Mariners with a low shot from the edge of the box. At the other end, both Kim and Lallianzuala Chhangte fluffed their lines from within the six yard box. With the game seemingly done and dusted, substitute Jeje Lalpekhlua made it four for Mohun Bagan. At full time, the scoreline read 4-0 in Mohun Bagan’s favour against DSK Shivajians.

“We gave away sloppy goals, and if you do that against a team like Mohun Bagan, you get punished. We created some half chances, and if we’d have gotten a goal after half time, we’d have been much better. (Despite being behind) the boys kept trying, and kept creating opportunities and for that I’ve to give them credit. Full credit to Mohun Bagan though, they scored the goals and deserved to win the match,” said Dave Rogers, DSK Shivajians manager after the match.

DSK Shivajians FC will next play Bengaluru FC on Wednesday, May 10 at 4pm.
