FC Basel 1893 has come to the decision to end its cooperation with head coach Alex Frei with immediate effect. FC Basel regrets this decision very much, but feels compelled to take this step due to the sobering sporting development.
After 19 Swiss Super League rounds played, FCB have only five wins with seven draws and defeats. After the recent results since the resumption of the championship and the slide in the table, FC Basel is forced to stop the downward trend. With a three-point lead over the last place in the table, while at the same time the teams placed behind FC Basel are on the rise, the club management lacks the perspective and belief in timely improvement in the current constellation.
FC Basel sporting director Heiko Vogel said, “Of course, this decision is extremely difficult for all of us – anyone who knows our special composition can imagine that. But we have to think about FCB and its development, so we can’t avoid acting and giving the team new impetus. In the current situation, the 0:1 against GC at the weekend was unfortunately this one defeat too many.”
Heiko Vogel will temporarily lead the team as interim head coach. However, FC Basel is striving to fill the position of head coach as soon as possible and will inform about this in due course.
