FC Goa climb to top of Goa Pro League table after Velsao SCC draw!

Vasim Inamdar’s goal in the second half fetched FC Goa a crucial point in the Goa Professional League as they held Velsao Sports and Cultural Club to a 1-1 draw at the Duler Stadium in Mapusa on Monday. The point helped FC Goa’s Development Team take the lead of the league, starting their campaign on a four-game unbeaten run.

Monday’s clash began with the Gaurs getting their first goalscoring opportunity as early as the third minute. Muhammed Nemil found Jovial Dias out wide with a good pass and the latter advanced to the edge of the box with the ball, only to fire wide off the mark.

It was Velsao SCC, though who struck first, scoring against the run of play in the 21st minute. A quick counter-attack got the better of the FC Goa defence as a failed clearance saw Vinoth romp through on goal before finishing past goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari to give his team the lead.

Following the change of ends, FC Goa started to work up a head of steam as they went in hunting for the equaliser. Their efforts bore fruit not long after, with Vasim Inamdar scoring the crucial goal in the 52nd minute.

Lalremruata HP did extremely well to spot Nemil’s run on the left flank and play the perfect through-ball to the youngster. The goalkeeper seemed to have Nemil’s first-time shot covered, but Inamdar met it halfway through its path and diverted the ball into the far corner of the net.

FC Goa continued to have the upper hand over the proceedings and created a string of chances in the last few minutes to try and take home the three points.

Deeshank Kunkalikar, Vasim Inamdar, Rayan Menezes and Lesly Rebello all came close to scoring post the 85th minute but a handful of timely interventions by Velsao goalkeeper Arnab Das and their backline kept the scoresheet unchanged till the final whistle.

The FC Goa Dev Team now have eight points from four matches in the ongoing 2022-23 edition of the GPL. Next up for the Boys in Orange in the league is a clash against Panjim Footballers, at the Duler Stadium on January 13.
