FC Goa edge past Dempo SC 2-1 in GFA President’s Super League!

Strikes from Nestor Dias and Delton Colaco helped FC Goa to a 2-1 win over Dempo SC in today’s encounter in the GFA President’s League at the Salvador do Mundo Panchayat Ground. An injury time goal by Gaurav Vaigankar made for a jittery end to the game for the Gaurs, but Deggie Cardozo’s boys held on to all three points.

Cardozo changed the entire starting XI from the team that took to the pitch against Bengaluru FC in the Gaurs’ most recent game in the Reliance Foundation Development League. That, though, didn’t disrupt the chemistry of the side.

The Gaurs’ started briskly with the first attempt on goal coming in the 2nd minute itself through Ronaldo Oliveira and Britto Pereira. Oliveira zigzagged past defenders into the box and passed the ball to Britto, whose shot was then deflected out for a throw-in.

A lack of precision in the final third meant the Gaurs failed to capitalise on the strong start. The boys in Orange had to wait till the 31st minute to score the opener. A foul on Delton Colaco inside Dempo’s box resulted in a penalty which was coolly converted by captain Nestor Dias. This was his first goal of the ongoing season.

It took just two minutes since the start of the second half for FC Goa to double their lead – this time in spectacular fashion. Delton found himself with loads of space just outside Dempo’s box and unleashed a shot which flew past their goalkeeper and into the far corner of the net to score his second of the season.

The match then turned into a heated affair with both teams fighting for possession. Dempo often had the upper hand since then but the Gaurs’ defenders managed to keep them at bay with a solid display.

In the 77th minute, FC Goa were reduced to ten men following the sending off of Alister Fernandes. This gave Dempo an added advantage and they responded by attacking relentlessly. Their efforts finally bore fruit in injury time with Gaurav finding the back of the net. That, though, proved too little too late as the referee blew the final whistle shortly afterwards.

The FC Goa Dev Team will return to action on Sunday, April 24, when they lock horns with Jamshedpur FC in the Reliance Foundation Development League at the Nagoa Panchayat Football Ground.
